Transforming Lives: “Ahopanilolo Technical Institute

In 1969, the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary planted a seed of hope in Tonga. They founded the Ahopanilolo Technical Institute, a pioneering school designed to give academically and financially disadvantaged students a life-changing opportunity to further their education. What began humbly as a basic training centre for cooking, sewing and daily life skills has blossomed into a premier, highly recognized institution. Today, Ahopanilolo Technical Institute’s curriculum is fully accredited by the Tonga National Qualification Board (TNQAB), offering professional certificates in Catering, Hairdressing, Fashion and Design, Accommodation, Food Service, and Front Office skills.

Leadership of the school was officially handed over to the Catholic Diocese of Tonga in 2018 but SMSM still remain at the heart of its mission. Two sisters continue to serve the student body full-time. Sr. Anamalia Pailate provides vital counselling and emotional support to both students and staff, while I am part of the cooking department. In the kitchen, Training is hands-on. Students don't just practice in a classroom but manage outside catering events, learning the exact entrepreneurial skills needed to run their own future businesses.

A Holistic Approach to Growth

Ahopanilolo Technical Institute goes beyond standard academics. Following its rich Catholic heritage, the school day is anchored in faith—beginning with morning prayer, pausing midday for the Angelus, and gathering every Friday for school Mass. To nurture the whole person, studentsalso participate in sport, singing, and counselling.

A First Mission Reflection

"Ahopanilolo Technical Institute is my very first mission, and after nearly a year here, my heart is full. Every single day, I am inspired by our students. Watching their enthusiasm to learn, grow, and acquire the skills they need to build a self-sufficient future is an absolute joy. We are deeply grateful to the administration for keeping the original vision of this institute alive, caring for the intellectual, physical, and spiritual needs of Tonga's youth."

May God bless all the students and their parents!
