Greetings from Maitum, Philippines!

Our BRC Summer School takes place every year for five weeks during the summer break. The program involves not only remedial education but also includes food distribution and free medical and dental consultations for the children.                                    

This year the program was held in two sites. We had 250 students and most of whom were indigenous (Tiboli), our target audience. Besides children from Grades 1 to 6, there were kindergarten children since there were a lot of them attending the class every day. We had three hours of classes every day and the children had two meals; morning tea and a snack which includes rice. Extra food was taken home by the children for their parents and siblings.

This year we were very happy to have new helpers: Sr Michelle was with us during her summer break, Sr Francisca and new graduate teachers from NDDU. Three Marist Bother’s Postulants also joined us for ten days during their Community Exposure. FrRoque Repito celebrated our thanksgiving Mass with our Parish Priest. Some of our BRC mothers helped out with the cooking. We were very grateful to have Sr Sheila Manalo sm for the Dental assessments of the children as well as the medical team from Gensan.

Some positive outcomes included:- gaining weight and gaining confidence in the classroom which will help the children carry on to the next academic year. These children also inspire us with their perseverance to walk long distances, crossing mountains and rivers to come to us. We make sure we receive them with much love and care.
